    Multi-unit assignment under dichotomous preferences

I study the problem of allocating objects among agents without using money. Agents can receive several objects and have dichotomous preferences, meaning that they either consider objects to be acceptable or not. In this set-up, the egalitarian solution is more appealing than the competitive equilibrium with equal incomes because it is Lorenz dominant, unique in utilities, and group strategy- proof. Both solutions are disjoint

Improving efficiency and equality in school choice

How should students be assigned to schools? Two mechanisms have been suggested and implemented around the world: deferred acceptance (DA) and top trading cycles (TTC). These two mechanisms are widely considered excellent choices because they are strategy-proof, in addition to DA's no justified envy and TTC's Pareto optimality. We show theoretically and empirically that both mechanisms perform poorly with regard to two key desiderata such as efficiency and equality, even in large markets. In contrast, the rank-minimizing mechanism (RM) is significantly more efficient and egalitarian. It is also Pareto optimal for the students, unlike DA, and generates less justified envy than TTC

Toeplitz Operators on Two Poly-Bergman-Type Spaces of the Siegel Domain D2C2D_2 \subset \mathbb{C}^2 with Continuous Nilpotent Symbols

We describe certain CC^*-algebras generated by Toeplitz operators with nilpotent symbols and acting on a poly-Bergman type space of the Siegel domain D2C2D_{2} \subset \mathbb{C}^{2}. Bounded measurable functions of the form c~(ζ)=c(Imζ1,Imζ2ζ12)\tilde{c}(\zeta) = c(\text{Im}\, \zeta_{1}, \text{Im}\, \zeta_{2} - |\zeta_1|^{2}) are called nilpotent symbols. In this work we consider symbols of the form a~(ζ)=a(Imζ1)\tilde{a}(\zeta) = a(\text{Im}\, \zeta_1) and b~(ζ)=b(Imζ2ζ12)\tilde{b}(\zeta) = b(\text{Im}\, \zeta_2 -|\zeta_1|^{2}), where both limits lims0+b(s)\lim\limits_{s\rightarrow 0^+} b(s) and lims+b(s)\lim\limits_{s\rightarrow +\infty} b(s) exist, and aa belongs to the set of piece-wise continuous functions on R=[,+]\overline{\mathbb{R}}=[-\infty,+\infty] and with one-sided limits at 00. We describe certain CC^*-algebras generated by such Toeplitz operators that turn out to be isomorphic to subalgebras of Mn(C)C(Π)M_n(\mathbb{C}) \otimes C(\overline{\Pi}), where Π=R×R+\overline{\Pi}=\overline{\mathbb{R}} \times \overline{\mathbb{R}}_+ and R+=[0,+]\overline{\mathbb{R}}_+=[0,+\infty]

What happens when separate and unequal school districts merge?

We study the welfare effects of school district consolidation, i.e. the integration of disjoint school districts into a centralised clearinghouse. We show theoretically that, in the worst-case scenario, district consolidation may unambiguously reduce students’ welfare, even if the student-optimal stable matching is consistently chosen. However, on average all students experience expected welfare gains from district consolidation, particularly those who belong to smaller and over-demanded districts. Using data from the Hungarian secondary school assignment mechanism, we compute the actual welfare gains from district consolidation in Budapest and compare these to our theoretical predictions. We empirically document substantial welfare gains from district consolidation for students, equivalent to attending a school five kilometres closer to the students’ home addresses. As an important building block of our empirical strategy, we describe a method to consistently estimate students’ preferences over schools and vice versa that does not fully assume that students report their preferences truthfully in the student-proposing deferred acceptance algorithm

    Fair Cake-Cutting in Practice

Using a lab experiment, we investigate the real-life performance of envy-free and proportional cake-cutting procedures with respect to fairness and preference manipulation. We find that envy-free procedures, in particular Selfridge-Conway, are fairer and also are perceived as fairer than their proportional counterparts, despite the fact that agents very often manipulate them. Our results support the practical use of the celebrated Selfridge-Conway procedure, and more generally, of envy-free cake-cutting mechanisms. We also find that subjects learn their opponents' preferences after repeated interaction and use this knowledge to improve their allocated share of the cake. Learning reduces truth-telling behavior, but also reduces envy
